FREE Oblivion Halloween Party 10/25/11 in Los Angeles

If you haven't been following us on Facebook or Twitter...this Tuesday October 25th in Los Angeles we are hosting a FREE Oblivion Halloween Party. Live Halloween-themed bands, spooky DJs, and a screening of the never-before-seen cut of the Oblivion Halloween Special. The special has been trimmed down from its original running time to be a stand-alone movie with new effects added in by Oblivion cinematographer Jessica Gallant. This event is not to be missed!

And did we say it's FREE?

The event starts at 7pm!

Screening begins at 8:30pm sharp.

Followed by bands right after.

Featuring DJs Carlos Colon and Arthur Allblack and possibly Brian Waters ("Danny Cutter"). Also, the live debut of Ziggy's band...Anal Ballz (formerly known as Johnson's Underwear, formerly known as Expose the Jews, formerly known as Ghoulie Ghoulie Ghouls and the Ghoulie Ghoulie Ghouls).

We didn't steal awards at the ITV Fest but we want to thank both Ken and Frank for selecting our web series Oblivion as a Stay Tuned TV Best Drama nominee and for their generous support!

Little had we known but both Rachel Castillo ("Joy") and Jeff Rice ("Vince") had received Best Actress in a Drama and Best Actor in a Drama Nominations. Join us Sunday May 15th for a night of celebration as artist and photographer Gina Clyne unveils her photography book 1, 2, 3. (or: To Do's Done To Date) at Stories Books and Cafe. A book project 5 years in the making, 1,2,3. is a compilation of three photography projects which trace the artist's developing relationship with photography as an art student from 2003 to 2005. This limited edition of 50 books was hand bound in its entirety by the artist; from the page layout to the screen printing of its hard cover, her hand was involved in each step of the process.

The evening will include a casual conversation with Clyne and contemporary artist Alex Slade that touches on a range of topics related to book making and photography. Shortly thereafter will be a screening of a short video that exposes the process of binding the book. This video was shot over the course of several months by photographer/actress Julie Pepin and is accompanied by an original song from musician Laena Geronimo.

Copies of 1, 2, 3. (or: To Do's Done To Date) will be available for sale the night of the event. An exercise in follow-through, this labor intensive multi-media event comes to fruition on May 15th, and all are welcome to attend.

CASTING CALL

Oblivion director Mike Cuenca is holding an open casting call for his new feature NON COMPOS MENTIS Or: The Delusional Candor of Jerry Powell. It's a deadpan crime comedy and he's looking to fill large, small, and non-speaking roles.

Blvd. Du Cinema is now casting for a trilogy of loosely connected black and white features. Director Mike Cuenca (Oblivion: The Web Series) is seeking to cast actors who are versatile and can appear in a cameo role in two of the films and then as a lead/supporting part in the other.

The first in the trilogy...Non Compos Mentis: or the Delusional Candor of Jerry Powell is a deadpan black comedy.

[FRITZ] Male, early 30s, 5'3 - 5'9. Dry / sarcastic. Jerry's involuntary best mate. No one knows why Fritz is always around Jerry or what his real name is because that's what Jerry always refers to him as. He's a grumpy man, albeit quite at times unless provoked, who's very straight-forward about things unlike Benzo (see below) who sugar-coats advice. Jerry is always beating on Fritz and also refers to him as a "Nazi Kraut" even though Fritz has no german ancestry in his bloodline. He accompanies Jerry on all of his adventures. Up until the bitter end.

[BENZO (aka Benny)] Male, 30s-40s, 5'9 - 6'4. Thick East Coast accent. Used to be a delivery man for Ariel until he started sleeping with her. He considers himself Jerry's close friend and is constantly trying to pull Jerry out of whatever predicament he's in. Seeing how he's the voice of reason in Jerry's life, Jerry has grown to distrust him because "no one can be that nice unless they're getting something out of it". Thing is, Jerry might just be right.

[ARIEL] Female, mid-30s to mid-40s. A no bull-shitter. She's the one that gives Jerry his orders and manipulates others to do her bidding. She plants an idea in Donna's head that sets off a series of events.

[DONNA] Female, late-20s to early 30s. The love of Jerry's life, or so she thinks; he could care less about her. Donna has a chemical imbalance and relies on Jerry's attention too much and when she doesn't receive it, she's willing to sell him out just so he can notice her. She has nervous ticks, is pushy in a "too sweet" way, and motherly; treats Jerry like an infant which drives him insane. She buys him a jacket that serves as the McGuffin to the entire story.

[MILK MAN] Male, 30s to 40s. A long-haired/bearded, slow-thinking, garment fetish pervert. He's scraggly looking with yellow teeth and diverting eyes. He might even be on PCP. When Jerry meets him he keeps him around because he knows he can't trust him. He will accompany Jerry and Fritz on the final delivery.

Smaller Roles

[MR. DEMILLE] Male, 50s to 70s. A flamboyant, brightly-colored con man loosely based off of Kenneth Anger and father of Ariel.

[RUDY] Male, 40s to 60s. A white trash mechanic/crook with Indian blood.

[JERRY'S FATHER] Male, 50s to 60s. Jerry's New York-born, tough as nails father.

[THE MISTRESS] Female, 40s to 60s. Jerry's father's mistress.

[ZEPHORRA] Female, mid to late 20s. A fun, illusive videographer with relationship problems. This is a cameo role in "Jerry" but is the lead in the follow-up feature "Zephyre Antidote".

[DARBY] Male, early to mid 20s. Zephorra's boyfriend. This is a cameo role in "Jerry" but is the third largest role in the follow-up feature "Zephyre Antidote"

[BOUNCER] Male, 30s to 40s. One line of dialogue.

Hey, there...

Just want to say thanks to all our devoted fans. Oblivion had a productive 2010 and we have some awesome stuff coming your way in '11. We have 10 more brand new Oblivion episodes premiering in the earlier part of this year, Oblivion merch, more screenings, more (although they have been heavily delayed) podcasts, and some amazing Oblivion artwork by Chynna Clugston (responsible for comics Blue Monday and Scooter Girl...you can visit here blog here: http://newwavezombie.blogspot.com).

There will also be a blvdducinema.com covering all projects being released under the Blvd. Du Cinema banner. The site will feature bios by other filmmakers and crew working with us as well as a blog I'll be updating weekly, which will cover a host of things. Production on Oblivion will be taking a break (again) but as I work on three loosely connected separate black & white features this year. First one (and my second directorial feature) starts shooting at the end of this month and you'll recognize a few Oblivion cast members in drastically different roles in each one of the flicks. Plot and details will slowly be revealed in the next few weeks.

Don't forget that our Oblivion Halloween Special wrap-party is this Saturday in Los Angeles where we'll be screening Parts 2 & 3 of the Halloween Special weeks before they're made available to the public. We don't have a definite release date yet so I highly urge you to attend.

On other junk...DIY filmmaker Mike Cuenca has finally decided to release his feature debut Scenes From Oblivion. It's an all-new, never-before-seen cut.

"I'm okay with it now. I used to hate it. But don't expect it to be like Oblivion. It's slow-paced with a lot of dialogue. Some of the Oblivion characters appear here for the first time in small roles." says Cuenca.

He also mentions of a possible Oblivion fest at an unspecified theater in Los Angeles. Plans are to screen a few punk music videos, influential films, the first public showing of Scenes From Oblivion, a few episodes and the still in production delayed Halloween Special.

"I think the Halloween Special is probably the best and my personal favorite Oblivion-related thing we've worked on. Take the humor from 'The Phone Call' episode and crank it to 11. It's incredibly absurd and camp and really what we're going for with the rest of the series. We've found our voice."

The Oblivion Halloween Special features cameos by almost every notable Oblivion character, local LA band Dante Vs. Zombies, the Holwenstall Slayer, and the debut of Ziggy's all-new Anal Ballz (currently known as Expose the Jews) line-up.

Yep, still no new Oblivion episode but the 3-Part delayed Halloween Special will most likely make the rounds before Christmas if all goes according to plan. It will be well worth the wait. And last but not least, if you are in the LA area this weekend you do NOT want to miss this event.

Fantagraphics (basically the Criterion Collection of comic books) has published a new book titled "Destroy All Movies: The Complete Guide to Punks on Film". Even though Oblivion isn't mentioned (the cut-off point was 1999), we highly suggest you check the book out. To coincide with the book's release, the Cinefamily/Silent Film Theater is holding a huge Punk Film Fest this weekend (11/20-11/21).

Oblivion: The Podcast

Starting August 16th we will be releasing Episodes 1-3 of Oblivion with captions for the hearing-impaired (or for those who want to read-along with the spoken dialogue). Versions of the episodes with Spanish subtitles for our growing Latin American fan-base will also be made available.

Official release date for the new Oblivion episodes is now Sept. 16th...an entire year after we premiered the pilot. Prepare yourselves for bi-weekly all-new episodes that blow the three released ones out of the water.

Coming later this month:

Oblivion: The Podcast.

This will include cast and crew commentary tracks for released episodes, interviews with guest stars plus musicians who have contributed to the show's soundtrack, as well as the cast just goofing around and discussing whatever topic of the week is found of interest.

The Oblivion Podcast is expected to be released bi-weekly as well...aka every other week that a new episode of Oblivion isn't premiering.

Below you will find a link to the re-cut pilot episode of Oblivion.

Pilot episode for OBLIVION: The Series. Portraying the interlocking lives of a band of punks, mods and rockers.

Let me just say this...it took me ages to get this back into shape after all my gear and footage got stolen. Thanks to Jessica (DP) for still having XMLs of the episodes which allowed me to piece them back together.

This is my director's cut of the pilot episode of Oblivion. Includes an additional 5 minutes of brand new footage and alternate shots. It ain't perfect (remember our budget) but it gives a lot more exposition on the show. Wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for everyone who contributed to the Kickstarter campaign.

Pilot episode establishes the show (like all pilots do...duh), the second one fleshes it out just a bit, and the third episode is when things start meshing together. With that in mind, we've got some great new episodes coming up ahead this summer. As well as some special surprise guest stars.

Monday keep on the look out for each episode cut into three parts. This will be up on YouTube, Blip.Tv and more.

And here's a treat for anyone wanting to keep track of all the characters and episodes of the show. We have constructed an Oblivion Wiki. That's right. During the lull in between episodes 3 & 4 we’ve received a few emails regarding the future of Oblivion. Mike Cuenca answers your questions below.

Q: What’s next for Oblivion now that the Kickstarter campaign was a success?

MC: I’ve repurchased some of the gear. The plan is to continue where we left off, which is to get the missing footage we haven’t shot from episode 4. Release 4 and 5, shoot 6. I'm adding some additional content to the pilot. And I'm adding a different VO for Joy because I don't like it at the moment. It’s gonna be a better pilot. And then we're gonna do a cast audio commentary track for each of the released episodes. The improved pilot should be up in a few weeks.

Q: On the Common Film Podcast you mentioned that half of the second season will portray the characters in their teens. What's the basis for that?

MC: I’m gonna sound like George Lucas but…that was always the intended time-period the series was going to take place in. I just decided to go with what was easiest to make, which coincidentally happens to be the middle story of a three-part saga (at least, in my head it's a three-part saga)...using available actors/non-actors who believe in the project to portray Oblivion’s prominent characters opposed to wrangling a bunch of rowdy teens.

The current story you're seeing on Oblivion is: these people are already established. They are who they are, have been into the lifestyle they're into for years. They all have their issues, they have their problems, shit from the past they're dealing with and slowly they begin to question their own existence and if they should keep continuing to do what they're doing. They're asking, what's the purpose of all this? And some of them just shrug it off their shoulders too. Like, “Whatever, man.”

The third part would be to revisit all the surviving characters down the line, maybe 10, 20 years from now and see where they are in life. The second season will go into how most of these characters met, how they became who they are, how they first got into rock & roll: teenage-angst, feuds with their parents, junior high, high school mischief, all on camera. That's gonna be a lot of fun. That's really going to capture what I've been meaning to capture from the get-go. It will redefine the cast of characters for viewers. I also, wanna do the Godfather Part 2 thing - where the origin storyline coincides with the current one and we weave back and forth between the two.

Q: What’s up with Scenes From Oblivion?

MC: I’m not releasing. It is what it is. That was my film school. A lot of the pertinent footage I will recycle into OBLIVION during flashbacks. I am leaning towards remaking it, though, but cutting off its ties to Oblivion…not entirely but severely. I don’t think the leads are likable enough (or age-appropriate) but that’s due to bad casting decisions on my part. There’s a reason why the Oblivion characters steal the show.

Q: Are there any other projects besides Oblivion you’re working on? Are you or any of the cast members in bands and if so, will they be featured on the show?

MC: Yeah. I’m casting for a feature that’s going to take at the very least five years to make. It’s going to be purposely shot in segments or vignettes in almost real-time. I’d like to shoot that on film and acquire some sort of financing as we go along. There’s the SFO remake I’m considering, plus two standard smaller features that can be done on shoe-string I want to work on. One’s scripted; the other is only an idea. I just haven’t decided which one to focus on yet.

I used to be in a couple bands but don’t have the time to invest in one anymore but will have to since Ziggy’s band will be performing some actual live shows. Eric [“Rat”] has some solo material he releases under The Great Gleaming Sea and is currently performing with the Stevenson Ranch Davidians. And Kirk [“Dexter”] used to play drums for the Cute Lepers and Red Hearts.

Q: How difficult is it filming on essentially no-budget? On the Behind the Series thing you guys make it seem like child’s play.

MC: It's tough. Especially lacking proper locations. I wish we could go the pre-budget era John Waters route and re-use/disguise a room to make it look however we want over and over. That requires a lot of props and maybe a set-dresser. But no, sometimes we have to steal shots. An establishment sometimes will only let us in for about a half hour max so we gotta make sure we get the essentials and move on. I mean, the ADs themselves put in a lot of work and they're not getting paid. They're stressed most of the time. Especially Patrick. He has to schedule at least 20-other people that aren't receiving pay (or meals) and we have to plan things around their work schedules.

Q: How long will OBLIVION last?

MC: Show is planned for three seasons. Don't want to overstay our welcome. That is, if we get financing, of course. But who knows? If we have the financing and more stories to tell after the third season's arc, and if they're worth telling, then why not? I’ll tell you right now: there is no way in hell we can complete the first season the way it's planned without the proper financing and everyone’s commitment. It’s a pretty intense season ender. That’s where you’ll see the shift from pure comedy to more drama.

Q: How successful do you want the show to be? What are your plans?

MC: Yeah, being successful at this would be nice. You know, getting paid to do what you love. But I see production as band practice. When we premiere an episode it's like that long-awaited gig we've been practicing to play. It's fun. And as long as everyone involved is willing to do it, Oblivion will go on in some form. To further advance that analogy, I would like to tour the episodes, screening them at indie theaters, followed by a Q&A.

Again, can we get past the 5th or 6th episodes? We have three actors who live out of state, we have no money, we all work day jobs (some even night jobs as well)...but, yeah. Hey, you know, and if shit doesn't pan out, I'll just release all the scripts so interested parties can see what would have happened.

Q: How did you get Don Bolles on the show? Will he appear again?

MC: I just asked him. Yeah, Don plays an integral part on the show.

In the future I'd love to have all these rock & roll icons play a lot of the supporting roles…a lot of the characters' parents. I have a wish list: John Doe as Vince's father, Vick; Courtney Love as Joy's mom; Jello Biafra as Frankie's old man; the list goes on and on. I think Pat Smear as Ziggy's uncle would be cool. People tend to say I look like Pat Smear.

Q: I think having the show set in a fictional town takes away from the ‘grounded in reality’ aspect the series could have. Why the decision?

MC: Because towns like that don't really exist. We're obviously constrained by the lack of a budget so we can’t show much of it, but it's a fantasy counterculture-populated/rock & roll town. You walk out and almost everyone’s a little off. A lot of the residents listen to similar music, they go to the same hang-out spots, they do the same drugs, that sort of stuff. It’s where music enthusiasts flock to. Plus I like the idea of having a completely corrupt town full of junkies and crooked cops that used to be the setting ground for these insane witch trails in the 1600s. We’ll reveal more of how Blair’s ancestry ties into that in planned episodes.

Q: I thought you guys won the Cirkus competition and had Shado.TV financing your show?

MC: I honestly have no idea what’s going on with that. At the moment they don’t seem to be acting like professionals (which is odd because Shado is associated with H-Farm) and keep telling us we’ll have this and that date set-up for a conference call, no word, it’s pushed back; they want to discuss contracting, they set-up a date, they flake. I’m getting tired of it. I’m going to attempt to acquire financing or at least some form of sponsorship my own way. Which is how we were able to make SFO.

Q: There’s no such social group as a one-of-each alt.culture reject stereotype. If you’re trying to be so “authentic” why go that route?

MC: We haven’t. That’s Holwenstall. All the characters portrayed tie into Joy and the Brookhurst somehow. The new pilot content will emphasize this. Besides, the show is about people who identify and hang out with others that share common interest.

A few of the significant characters hang out but you'll see in upcoming episodes that, yes, Frankie has anarcho-punk vegan friends. Blair has her own close-knit group of friends. Dexter's always around her because they're childhood friends. And for some reason he feels over protective about her. A lot of these people have known each other for years. Besides, in my own experience no one was branded any sort of label or followed one specific genre of music and pigeonholed themselves. Everybody in a R&R scene knew each other or of each other and were somewhat friendly towards one another because they could relate in some form.

Q: At first all the many characters threw me off but I think I get what you’re trying to do. I also think the show is meant for repeated viewings. So, 1) Are you telling a bigger picture or are you coming up with things as you go along and seeing what works? 2) How do you collaborate on the writing process? Is it more scripted or improvised by the actors? And 3) How would you describe the humor?

MC: 1) No. We're telling a story. I grew up on serials and I love stuff like that. And comic books. Everything we portray on camera or through dialogue will be revisited later. Everything's going to lead into something. We're telling a bigger picture.

2) The writing process involves me telling the other writers (Ashlee Elfman and Kenny) what’s gonna happen in the first season (points A to C to F), we start throwing shit out to fill in the blanks, I write a bunch of stuff, they go and write their own individual scenes, I come in and add my own element to what they’ve written, new ideas flourish from that and so on. But it’s a super heavily-plotted show. And, with that in mind, I encourage a lot of improvisation which will eventually work its way into the script. That whole walk-and-talk with Cliff and Vince in Episode 2 was originally improvised. Then we scripted it and had Jeff and Max rehearse it. Another thing to note is that a lot of the swearing on the show isn’t scripted. That’s just how most of the folks working on the show talk.

3) I think the fact that we have such a large group of characters in Oblivion lends itself to different types of humor. There's a mass appeal. With Pox you have low-brow, with Dexter you have slapstick, there's a bit of high-brow, and Ziggy and Darla are about dialogue. They're the Howard Hawks-influenced characters, I think.

But, yeah, it's this big ensemble project. We’re getting criticized for that but I keep pointing everyone to an Altman picture and Dazed and Confused. There are no lead characters but I guarantee we are investing time in each and every one of them, fleshing them out, giving them a story. All their arcs interweave and the best part about it is that you never know what's going to happen next.

OBLIVION Filmmaking Gear Stolen

A couple of nites ago in Los Feliz about $6K worth of filmmaking equipment was stolen out of my car: camera, mics, adapters, tapes, my brand new/still unpaid for Mac Book Pro laptop, an expensive external hard drive containing every single footage of OBLIVION we have shot plus scripts to future episodes, outlines, etc.. Its taken me a while to collect all this stuff and now it's all gone due to my negligence/letting my guard down for a half hour.

I need to pay for the laptop that was stolen that a friend put on her credit card and I need to start rounding up cash to slowly re-purchase all this gear. No gear means no more Oblivion.
